While the gambling business brings positive experiences to millions of players, some gamblers become victims of scandals that end in litigation. To remind you that even a successful gaming session can turn into a concerning situation eventually, we will shed light on some of the most outrageous casino lawsuits in history.
Christian Hainz
In 1997, Christian Hainz began visiting two Swiss casinos regularly and did not notice how he developed a serious gambling addiction. This destructive passion has been decimating his budget for three years and led him to €2.5 million in debt. Since Christian was sure that the gambling establishments manipulated him through various tempting offers, he decided to go to court and punish these casinos. As a result, the Austrian Court of Appeal decided that Hainz’s claim was reasonable. And in 2004, Christian received nearly €500 000 in monetary compensation from the accused casinos.
Katrina Bookman
We all dream of winning some kind of jackpot and securing our next generations financially. And although Katrina managed to achieve this luck-related goal in 2016, her story turned out to be much more terrible than she expected. The thing is that when Bookman won $43 million playing at the Resorts World Casino, this venue refused to pay her the jackpot due to an alleged malfunction of the slot machine. Instead of a multi-million dollar prize, the casino gave her $2.25 back and paid for her dinner. Katrina accused the casino of fraud and “thanked” it with a lawsuit. However, the 91-year-old woman still does not know how this well-known gambling court case will end.
Mark Johnston
This man decided to visit Las Vegas to spend his weekend there in 2014. Being pretty drunk, he went to the Downtown Grand Casino to end the day on a lucky note. But instead, Mark gambled away over $500 000 in credit money that the establishment gave him. Considering that the casino staff has been treating him with beverages for 17 hours, he refused to pay this credit and filed a lawsuit against the gambling venue. This idea turned out to be a failure for the unsuccessful gambler, and the court ruled in favor of the casino. It stated that Johnston seemed completely sober to the dealers during the game.
Arelia Taveras
This woman was a successful lawyer and had a beautiful house. But when she plunged into the world of Atlantic City casino entertainment, this adventure cost her about $1 million. Arelia lost not only all her money and real estate but also the funds of some of her clients. Taveras decided to try to solve this terrible situation by suing the seven largest gambling venues in Atlantic City. She claimed that the casinos were doing everything they could to keep her spending money and wanted to get $20 million in monetary compensation for their manipulative actions. However, the court ruled that these establishments did not violate any regulations and were not responsible for Arelia’s compulsive gambling.
