The Gambling Industry Is a Place of Constant Changes

Beatrice Svensson, Director of Employee Experience at Casumo, has discussed employees in the gambling industry and what experience they get.

What criteria show that a person can contribute to the company’s success in the gambling industry, in your opinion as a Director of Employee Experience?

This might sound like a cliche but being able to adapt to change definitely stands out! I have worked in several other industries and have never seen so many changes before. For people who like change it is a good thing as things never get boring, that is for sure.

Apart from that, it’s very different from company to company, there are big differences between start-ups and more mature corporations in terms of what it takes.

How have preferences for recruiting staff changed after the pandemic year?

I think most companies are more open to remote hires, and consultants say that it has, in general, worked well to work remotely. But I can’t see other changes, to be honest. On the other hand, I changed companies and joined Casumo in the middle of the pandemic so I can’t really compare Casumo’s preferences before and after/during.

What experience do people who work in the gambling industry get, and what differences from other industries does this area have?

I think there are several advantages for employees in this industry compared to other industries. First is the opportunity to learn and progress in your career faster than in other industries. This is highly linked to the number of changes.

Then there are many office perks that are not common in other industries. For example, having a chef and free lunch.

Many companies are competing for the same talent, and many times it requires relocation to a new country, so everyone is keen on making the employee experience better and more appealing than the competitors’.

Could you give any advice to the people who just started to work in the gambling industry or would like to try?

From an HR perspective, I would recommend planning one’s career and not getting tempted by the next offer with a flashy title. There will be new offers, so stay where you are happy and where you are learning, and career progression will come. I have seen employees going from team leaders in one company to COO in another, and, to be honest, that just looks strange on the CV. When you are starting, make sure to surround yourself with many experienced people. Move to a small start-up when you already master your field.

Also, think wider when it comes to progression, move sideways. That way you broaden your skillset, which is needed for more senior positions. And accept that change is constant – embrace it!
