The German payment system Computop is adding a new wallet called WERO to its capabilities, which is intended to simultaneously replace PayPal and account-to-account transfers for Europeans.
In Computop’s portfolio, WERO will join the ranks of familiar payment methods such as Apple Pay and Google Pay, as well as localised payment methods such as Twint in Switzerland and Blik in Poland.
Hopes are high for WERO’s success in Europe: the initial launch as a P2P product has already started, and by mid-2025 the wallet should become active in commerce. This is where the biggest boom in payments is expected – from QR codes, to even Buy Now Pay Later in 2026.
Next to this innovation, open banking, bank card payments and localised alternative methods that have long gained an audience in the EU are still extremely popular. For example MBWAY and Multibanco are still indispensable in Portugal.
